If you have a few bumps on different areas of your body, your first question is likely, “What is this?”.  After doing a few internet searches typing in different things that describe your bumps, you might come across the words Molluscum Contagiosum. We think that a picture is worth a thousand words, so we would like to provide you with some photos of Molluscum to help you see what to look for on yourself, children or family.

You may wonder what exactly is Molluscum Contagiosum?

It’s a very common viral skin condition, mostly seen in children. Molluscum lesions are pink or flesh-colored small dome-shaped bumps. In the middle of each bump is a white “waxy” core. They are usually around 2-5mm in size, but can sometimes be a little larger. Though these bumps can appear anywhere on the body, they are most common on the torso or in areas where there is friction, such as the armpits, behind the knees or in the creases of elbows. Occasionally, they appear on the face or in the genital area. As the bumps begin to resolve, they turn a dark red color and eventually scab over before fading.

Molluscum is not a harmful virus

It is contagious and spreads through physical contact. The bumps may itch at times, so be sure not to scratch them as that can cause the virus to spread. It can also be spread through objects that the contaminated person has touched such as towels, toys and clothing.
